Hi,

I'm sure this has been asked already, but I've had a look and found nothing. does anyone know the best rate for Boiler Insurance? And does it have to be with your own gas supplier? And has anyone had good/bad experiences?

I saw in the paper that one- Scottish Gas?- had got in trouble for generally being crap.

Please help- this is something i need to do, and don't know where to start!

Thanks, Daisy

    Hi Daisy,

Here is a point to start, basically isurance plays on paranoia, and they all want people top think the worse is going to happen so you will buy the product.

Ask yourself a few questions, do you have any probs with your heating, is the boiler quite and seem trouble free so far, is the system young or fairly old.

If a boiler is less than two years old it's covered by the makers, if it's over 10 years old the company may not have the parts any longer in which case it's a new boiler ? if that is the case check do they give you a whole new boiler and fit it free if it breaks down.

Well mine does not, I am jsut about to get a new system fitted, with the £16.00 I was paying for boiler insurance I am not saving £20.00 in a high interest account by stadning order, should the worse happen I have some money to fall on, if it does not I making money for myself.

I do also have a good credit card as back up, so you need to weigh up the options, personally if my boiler went belly up I would pay what I could from savings and pay the rest with a CC cheque.

I have come to the conclusion that 80% of insurance is a total waste of money.

I agreed totally with snaffler - if you pay £20 a month into a saving account you will have a decent amount to pay any repairs. (it is also a good way to save for any other household breakdowns - i.e. washing machine etc)

Remember - Appliance insurances are sold to make money for the insurance company, and as stated most of insurances never have a claim.

    Example
We have been in our house 4 years and our boiler packed up on boxing day last year - cost was £360. (if Id have paid £20 a month for 4 years total insurace cost would had been £960 - the figures speak for themselves )

Re - the credit card as mentioned you could always use a 0% card to pay for repairs and transfer balances when the 0% term is up - this way you dont pay interest, if your finances will be stretched paying for any repairs. But if looking at this option please read the credit card section of MSE to understand how this system works fully.

Insurance of this type is a personal choice, if you like to have peace of mind and cover all bases go for it, but there are are other ways to play the insurance system
Thanks to everyone who posts comps :T
  • Thanks for that- I would normally agree with you, I am amazed by the things people take out insurance for now, but this boiler has been nothing but trouble, and having just finally had it repaired and serviced i really want to insure it. I can't take any more dealing with emergency plumbers, plumbers who don't show up, don't call to say they aren't showing, switch of their phone, don't return calls, over charge, over charge a LOT, flood the guy downstairs, and generally take the !!!!!! in every way possible. I was without heating and hot water for 6 days this winter. If it is insured the rip off merchants are someone elses problem. I have dealt with about 10 Plumbers since buying the flat last March (we have also been getting a bathroom in, radiators fitted) and I don't have a good word to say about any of them.

Incidently, can anyone recommend a decent plumber (or plasterer, tiler, joiner, anyone) in the Glasgow area?

This is my first flat, and i just want to be renting again...

Has anyone taken out boiler insurance they are happy with?

    Daisy

I have bolier cover from Pottertons (branded 'Heatteam') which I pay £12 a month for and am happy with - used them once within a month of taking the cover and they replaced the pump

I would also consider Powergen which I think is £15 per month but unlike mine includes the full system (radiators, valves etc.) with 3 months free

(You do not have to have your gas supplied by them )
