AXA insurance scare

I purchased holiday insurance online direct from AXA. Taken ill in Dubai whilst on holiday in March. I was ambulanced off to a private hospital. Having paid out £100 for a doctor in the hotel, £60 for the ambulance, then £1000 for the start of the treatment in A&E. I was well enough to get my wife to call AXA. After eventually getting through to them
she gave them the policy number only to be was told it didn't exist, nor was there any record of my name on file !!! Asked how I had booked the policy, Tesco, moneymarket etc. my wife didn't know and put the phone down in disgust and tears. When I was told, panic then set in as by now the hospital were looking to keep me in with a possible total bill of £10,000. With possibly no insurance, I discharged myself and got the next plane home. Telephone call to Axa. Apparently the policy number issued was THE WRONG ONE and they read out the correct one. Obviously I have sent a pretty strong letter to them. Just waiting for a reply. Do I sue or not?

Thanks for the query. We were absolutely panic stricken at the thought of no insurance and AXA were supposed to be there to help. All I'm interested in is getting back the costs paid out. Compensation could be a bonus.0

Are they paying your medical expenses as per the policy? If so, I can't see what else you want - bunch of flowers?
Gone ... or have I?0 -

The problem you have is that you and your wife panicked. You must have known you had a valid Insurance policy and your wife should have 'stuck to her guns' particulary as she had the responsibilty for looking after you during your illness.
I doubt any Court would award you Compensation, you should however be able to recoup your Hospital expenses from AXA without too many problems
One of the great things about a site like this, is the information you glean from other contributors. There's one Guy who posts on this Forum, who's job it is to collect Medical expenses from Insurers who've had Policy holders admitted to Florida Hospitals. He says AXA are one of the worst Insurers to deal with. One good reason to avoid them.0 -
This is typical of Axa, admin is not their strong point.
If you have problems getting payment of your medical bills post up here or you could write to Jessica at the Telegraph. She deals with financial problems and often sorts out Axa Travel Claim problems. If you went through her you would probably get either a bunch of flowers or a hamper of exgratia payment of upto £200 ish0 -

If you have trouble with Axa, as i can guarantee you WILL, then i would sue them for what ever you are entitled to and more, they are the most incompetent insurance company i have ever had the misfortune of dealing with.0
