It's time for a new bed in the Bigcammy household. We're looking for a decent king size bed, or mattress as there's nothing really wrong with the divan base.

Any recommendations for decent suppliers in the greater Belfast area? Though I'm quite happy to travel if it means a good deal. Dreams are silly money, Sleepmasters are a bit more reasonable. I'm a hefty bloke, so it needs to be good quality.

Any advice please? Thanks

My advice would be to stay away from any big chain store, and go for smaller independent manufacturers if possible.

We were in a furniture shop in Lurgan called Alana Interiors and they had display mattresses on sale. We got a king size Silent Night Orthopedic mattress for £100. They also had a few others. Maybe worth a phone call before you drive that far though.

Try Sound Asleep Beds, they have 2 stores one in South St Newtownards and Main St Bangor. They are independant might be able to give you good advice and can give discount if you ask nicely. No silly prices either. Plus tend to have most items in stock so there is no waiting. www.sound-asleep-beds.co.uk

They are, but their mattresses are Ikea sized which differs from the normal double and king size, meaning I couldn't use my existing divan base. I'm afraid some of their beds are too flimsy for me!

I always found Keens on Albertbridge Rd quite reasonable and they are normally willing to knock a bit off. One thing I would say is get the best matress possible for the money you can afford and if poss spend that little bit extra.

As my grandfather always told me

"make sure you have a good bed and a good pair of shoes, becasue if you're not in one, you're in the other!!!"

I know there isn't much choice in NI for beds, and the prices can be quite high. However I'm not sure if their high prices are the norm, so you would need to compare them to other independent retailers.
