It all depends - if I'm staying overnight with someone on the mainland (which can happen on occasion!), I'll try and take them some local produce - Salar Hot smoked salmon or some Stornoway Black Pudding, maybe some biscuits from the local bakers etc.
If I'm going to a friends for a meal, I normally take a bottle of wine and something sweet like muffins or chocolate brownies that I've made myself
