My new life - Day one

Day one and I already feel should I say, less than good.
I've checked my salary has been paid into my new account - it has which is good news.

I brought I lunch today and all the snacks I need to stop me raiding the v.expensive vending machine - I thought everything was going so well today!

But then two friend is doing charity thing today and asked me to sponsor them - that's a fiver gone

Then someone from the sports club I run asked me to get one of the mams a bunch of flowers for arranging a big fundraiser for us on Friday. I don't mind doing this as she did and excellent job, but as I work in town it always seems to be me who gets lumped with the cost of these things!

I'm also coaching tonight for four hours so will have to eat on the run. I hate Wednesdays at the best of times - today I feel worse than usual!!

I'm starting to think my lifestyle isn't cut out for this

Re sponsorship - don;t do it! I just tell peple I can't afford it.

Re flowers - tell the club to pay!!! Just say you'll do it of they give you the petty cash to get them.

It's not your lifestyle, it's that you are too soft right now!! YOU are the priority, not other people and their sponsored nonsense and flowers.

Well I'd say next tim they ask for sponsor ship just say no, sorry can't afford to this month :) Or if you don't like them knowign that then just say sorry I've already sponsored a couple of people for this and at this rate I'll be sponsoring the whole race and laugh about it :)
If people call you and ask you to get flowers for people then say sure - but explain to them that it would be nice for others to contribute towards the cost of the buket... Or say sorry I won't have a chance to pop out and get any today as work is short staffed etc :)

  • have to agree with skint chick here paying off debts means missing out on things you want to do like going out treating yourself its hard enuf trying to survive and pay off debts never mind paying for flowers that are not just ure reasponsibility why doesnt everyone in ure sports club chip a bit in for them. and as for the sponsering its charity i know but charity begins at home and ur skint

I agree with all the other posters - say no to the sponsorship seekers, tell them you already have given, have a set limit for charities, only give to certain charities, whatever excuse works for you! And claim back the cost of the flowers from the club or say no to that as well. Learn to say no to people - it gets easier, trust me!

Don't give up on day one! I've learnt that the change of attitude towards money takes practice, it doesn't just happen overnight. Unexpected expenses will crop up from time to time, even if you do budget as well as you can. But you'll be better placed to deal with them if you're budgeting well, and saving money where you can.

Start small and be pleased with the little gains - you brought all your lunch and snacks in today, that's a fantastic start. Just keep plugging away, it's not all going to fall into place overnight.

Thanks for your support everyone . I am going to stop being a WIMP.
V proud of myself as when I popped out for some fresh air just now (typing on the sly at work!) I saw a leather bag in Debenhams reduced from £60 to £30 - normally I wouldn't think twice - it WAS a bargain - but today I looked at it longingly and walked away.
I got a hint from another thread about putting a tenner in your purse at the start of the week and no more. I'm going to do that and at the end of the week put whatever is left in pot - If there's £30 left by the end of the month (or next pay day for me ) I might reward myself. However chances are the sale won't be on then and I will have forgotten all about the bag!!!

Yay, well done! I was so bad at impulse 'bargain' shopping, would buy stuff I didn't need all the time, get it home and wonder why I'd done it. It takes a while to break the habit, but you'll get there.

Saving money from your budgeted spends and food is a great way to let yourself have treats. I'm flying to Glasgow this weekend to visit a friend and the money has come from making cut-backs on my food and entertainment budget for this month. So it feels 'free' as I haven't raided my savings to go.

    good luck :)
