2 car insurance...

I'm looking to buy a second car and trying to work out the best way to get insurance. I've done a few google searches and as usual it comes up with conflicting answers.
The basic question: Is it possible to split NCD between 2 cars on a multicar policy?

the background: I've got a Toyota Supra and a Toyota Celica but i'm doing 375miles a week just going to work so neither are suitable really for high mileage travelling due to petrol costs. The Celica is up for sale and i've been playing on eBay to see what's available diesel wise and then going back to Admiral for insurance quotes.
Strangely enough one of the cheapest cars on insurance and not too expensive to buy would be a mid 90's Frontera.. not too clever on fuel so i looked at LPG converts and they're still quite cheap to buy and the Frontera is only an insurance group 9 / 10.
So off i went to Admiral and the prices on the multicar quotes are strange with the Supra obviously being the most expensive.. I've got 6 years NCD; if i play about with this on Admiral i get (for the Supra)
0 NCD - £630
6 years NCD - £491
3 years NC - £510

As you can see there's only £19 difference between 6 years and 3 years so the cheapest way of getting a multiquote is: 3 years on the Supra and 3 years on a Frontera.
Do they let you split NCD between 2 cars on the same policy? as the NCD is gained on the policy and not the car.

(i know Frontera's aren't amazing but they're cheapish to pick up, low insurance group and will handle a lot better than the Supra in the wet)

You earn NCD per policy, so cannot "share" NCD earned over other cars.

The multicar policy gives you a bit of discount for insuring more than one car with them, but often it works out cheaper to scour the market and take out separate policies with different companies.

Also if you use cashback sites, then two separate cashback payments will usually be far more than the discount allowed for putting both vehicles on a multicar policy.

Quite often if you insure both cars with the same co they will mirror your NCB from one car to the other for the first year.
But as Quentin pointed out, its sometimes cheaper to insure 2 cars with seperate companies.

Hi, it depends on whether or not there are any other drivers or named drivers. If you are prepared to have youself as "sole driver" for both cars then Admiral will give you full ncd on both cars.

    .

but a multicar policy is one policy not two. If it was two cars and two policies then yep but it's not. It's two cars and one policy, at the end of the policy i'll get 1 renewal form with seven years no claims so is there any reason why they wouldn't split it between the two cars on the policy?

cheer Keith, i didn't know that. I do have my mum on for obvious reasons but it barely affects the price anyway (and yep i'm the main driver, my mum is just there to knock a few pennies off)

Just to say we had a multicar policy with Admiral last year. (I got a quote for one car and the second was more expensive with Admiral than another ins co but Admiral gave us a discount for taking a multicar policy) We had 2 seperate policies, one for each car even though the envelopes the paperwork came in said on the front something along the lines of.... 'Your Admiral multicar policy is enclosed'
At renewal we got 2 letters stating how many NCB each car had.
Not sure if that's how multicar policies normally work but it did last year.

Hi, as Shelly says , you do get 2 policies in case there is a change in your circumstances and you need to revert to one car.
I think they only give full ncd on both policies if you state you are the sole driver because this guarantees only one car is used at a time.
I was previously with Privilege and the cost for my Nissan Xtrail was £270, I "acquired" a small 1300cc car and decided to use it as a "runabout". When I rang Privilege they wanted an extra £360 to add the second car meaning a total of £630. Admiral were the only insurance company that seemed geared up to the multicar concept and came up with a price for both cars of in total of £340 thats a difference of £290.

when i tried a multiquote with the Supra and Celica the price went up £200 from the online price and they claimed 'sometimes that happens'. I think it was a Saturday and he just couldn't be bothered doing his job.
