Help going wireless

I am going to go wireless because i have to run xbox live in another room.

My computer isn't wireless enabled.

My question is i have no room near phone socket for wireless router, but i have cable running about 5 metres long to existing modem, can i plug router into that cable?

If so Router will be next to my computer, can i then just run internet by connecting router to computer by cable, rather than buy a network adapter for my computer?

Thanks

You can do it like that, but it would be preferable to have router next to master phone socket...if you must do it with the cable, make sure you use high-quality Cat5e cable.....also check your internal phone wiring is in good nick....see

I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple :D
