Accessing DVD drive over network

I have an XP netbook, it doesn't have a dvd drive but a Vista computer on the same network has.

Although I can see the drive via "my network places" and can map it as a network drive, I'm unable to access it at all and get a message of either "access is denied" or "is not accessible. You may not have permission to use this network resource."

Given that I can access the roots of the hard drives on the Vista computer with no problems it doesn't seem to be a password problem.

Any ideas?

I take it you have right clicked on the drive and "shared" it

yes, otherwise it wouldn't show up in "my network places" and I wouldn't be able to map it as a network drive

On the root directories of the hard drives you not only have to do that and check the permissions are set for "everyone", you also have to go into the properties for the hard drive, select the security tab and add "everyone" with the appropriate permissions.

The DVD drive allows you to do the former but doesn't give the option for the latter

I've had problems with Vista shares too. I found that going into the security tab in properties and adding everyone then giving full control sorted it. You can get the impression that this is already set up from the sharing tab but I found that it wasn't so.

Sorry this is a bit "woolly" but I'm currently using an XP netbook and can't check this through to give exact info so what I've said is from memory.

Sharing a cd/dvd drive certainly works as I have done this myself

When you right click on a hard drive you get an option for "properties". Within this there are tabs for share & security. You need to set up both the share and security otherwise it will only be visible on the network but not accessible

If you do the same on the DVD drive then you only get a "share" option - no security option, thus it's impossible to grant access to the drive itself over the network even though you can see it on the network
