ive just had my award through yesterday and although i didnt have a medical the results are in 3 parts;points if your illness/disability affects your physical health, points if it affects your mental health and points if it affects both physical and mental health.
whether this means the actual medical is in 3 parts im not sure as i havent heard either way.i had a medical for incapacity benefit in 2006 but i guess the way the medicals are done now with the esa have drastically changed.

If you are still claiming IB those are the results relating to the points for IB and not ESA.

thanks healy,so what 3 parts is it for esa ?
it says in the letter that the threshold was met for my pca so hasnt it been changed to esa benefit for me now instead of incapacity benefit or does it stay as IB ??its so confusing!so boobless will have a 3 part medical?

Yes there are 3 parts to ESA:

    The work capability assessment
The ESA work capability assessment (WCA) is carried out by a health care professional working on behalf of the Department for Work and Pensions. It is intended to:

find out whether you have a ‘limited capability for work’.
find out whether you have a ‘limited capability for work-related activity’.
    carry out a ‘work-focused health-related assessment’.

Your assessment was still under the old IB system, it has not been changed to ESA. It will stay as IB for some time yet, it is planned to transfer everyone over to ESA between 2010 and 2013 (under 25s this year). It has also been mentioned that it will not start until 2012 in other guidelines so it is not clear yet. It is also not clear how much of the ESA regime current IB claimants will have to follow.

    hi all

very very distressed now, i have today recieved a letter from the dwp to say that i do not qualify for esa because i have only scored 12 points, i phoned the dwp and asked them to explain and the lady said i have to now claim jsa, but i thought for jsa you had to be eligible to seek work - my medical cert runs out october 18th.

i am really really confused now

If you are going to appeal the decision you can claim ESA at the assessment stage rate.

I don't think I'm the only person who'll be horrified to learn you didn't get all the points you need *hugs*

To claim JSA you need to be actively seeking work i.e. looking for a job. Do you think you're at that stage yet or capable of doing any kind of work ? Only you know your own health and what you're capable of doing. If you think you can do some work you can register for JSA, they've got disability advisers at the Job Centre who might be able to talk you through the type of work you're capable of doing and point you in the right direction when it comes to vacancies.

If you don't think you're capable for work you're going to have to appeal against their decision (and get your appeal in asap, but within a month). They'll keep you on ESA until the appeal is decided. You can get help with your appeal through Welfare Rights at the Council and through the Citizens Advice Bureaux.

Hope things go OK for you.

    thank you for your replys

i phoned the dwp back and they are going to send me the appeal form and said the appeal decisions etc take about 3 to 6 months to be looked at, if i do this i will receive the basic rate - he also said that i should ask my gp for a more detailed medical cert because on my last one he just wrote, cancer - and it may help if there was more information ?

oh well, here goes nothing i suppose, i have survived worse
