Wireless internet

My neighbour got a new laptop the other day. When I went round to see him he switched it on to show me, and a program called netgear (I think) fired up and asked if he wnated to make a connection. We decided to press ahead and got a broadband connection which varied between 1 and 2 meg, with a low signal strength. My question is twofold
(1) Where could this have connection come from, as his neighbours either side and behind do not habe a wireless connection to tap into

(2) How would he enalble his desktop computer which has broadband to send a signal to his laptop

Thanks

Q1 There must be someone in the vicinity with a wireless connection that does not have it firewalled.

Q2 You need to by a router you will also need to make sure that his laptop has a network card installed in it as well. Actually if he got a connection he must have a network card installed.

P.S i would just carry on using the free connection, But i must point out that it is illegal to use someone elses network.

If you need more help i will try to help you.
