Window updates can be a pain.. sometimes even having a specific patch will cause newer updates to fail.

You can check the Windows update log here:

    C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log

It will be quite long however, at the end you will prob see error messages relating to your failed updates, accompanied by error reference numbers. You should be able to Google them and find the cure. If you want to post them here I can have a look for you. (Don't post the whole log - just the errors :) )

Id be inclined to reinstall SP3 before continuing if I were you

  • A friend has actually suggested to me that I re-install XP and is helping me to do that currently. Given that the computer is more than six years old and running very slowly I should probably have done that some time ago...

I hope this will fix the problem for now.

Many thanks to everyone for your very helpful comments - am very grateful for your time.

Make sure you put some decent security on it

  • I've gone for Avast (which I had before) and Sunbelt Kerio firewall (which I didn't).

    Does that count as decent?

Thats fine so long as sunbelt works ok. When I tried it last it slowed certain webpages down to a crawl (randomly)

Also make sure you use MALWAREBYTES as a secondary scanner
