My mum has one too - about 25 years old and she has never had a problem with it. Gonna get one for the wife as she's wanted one for years.

The problem with these modern kenwoods is that the quality of components in the gears and motor are not as robust as in the older machines talked about in previous posts.
I have/had 4 kenwoods over the last 10 years [1 new - 3 used] and the only one never to give me a problem is the old one I got for £5 at a scout jumble sale - metal body, solid 'heavy' feel and the motor barely notices what mix is in the bowl .... all the others are relatively modern [plastic body/bowl, drive cogs with 'poly' teeth etc] and I have had to repair one with spare parts scavenged from another -I keep the new one as an emergency spare or for light jobs only.
In my opinion these modern kenwoods are not up to a heavy fruit cake/wedding tier style mix - it just puts too much strain on the moving parts and you can hear the motor groaning with the effort. They are ok for knocking up sponge mix, choux, fillings and batters etc
It's a sign of the times and also a convergence of manufacturing/ cost factors that leave us with what I think are substandard machines [and appliances in general].
Up until a few years ago home baking was still a popular thing to do - regularly as well - how many people can remember visiting Granny and there always being a cake baked and home-made biscuits in a metal tin in the larder ... if the mixers had been lightweight back then no-one would have bought one! ..... different story nowadays, few people do that sort of heavy baking so no real need for a heavy duty machine - manufacturing gets moved to a cheaper production centre and this is coupled with the search/use of cheaper components/parts ..... therefore the modern machines are likely to fail and the old ones won't!
It's a good price for a decent 'light' mixer but just don't expect it to mix to many wedding cakes.

I have a Kenwood. Its a few models up from this one as we did some research before buying. The previous poster is correct that the cheaper models have plastic gears (plastic case is not a problem as it makes it lighter) so may not last as long. The motors are very different also. Having looked on the web the Kenwood Chef machines of which the 300 is one have the cheaper parts and the Major machines have metal gears and bodies.

A couple of links to a spares site shows the difference in the parts(the major stuff is much chunkier)
    Chef 300

    Major
    http://www.electricshopping.com/shop/kenwood/shop.do?cID=172

That was just the first site I found with some spares pics. Even though at the money its going for you can't go wrong really. You could buy 6 for the price of one of their basic Major models.

    Hope that helps.

Can anyone tell me how it compares to a KitchenAid (http://www.kitchenaid.com/catalog/category.jsp?categoryId=310)
I really want one but can't afford it but if the Kenwood does the same then I will go for it.

    thanks
