orange webmail mail filters - setting these up

Possibly the most specialised post that there has been here!
I've tried to set up an Orange webmail filter which sends the spam emails which have "*** SPAM ***" added to the front of the subject to the Deleted folder. A pretty obvious thing to want to do, to prevent these messages being available for subsequent downloading into Outlook Express, for example.
When setting up this filter you occasionally get messages to say that special characters (e.g. asterisk, I suppose) are not allowed. Anyway, it doesn't seem to work successfully.
Has anyone come across this problem, and do they know of an answer? Googling has failed to produce any sensible discussion or a solution. "Orange mail filters are rubbish" is the typical standard response.
Or is there an intelligent Orange forum that anyone knows of?
Thanks
