Hi everyone,
I'm off to Budapest soon for 4 nights/5 days. Not really sure how much spending money I will need - is food/going out relatively cheap there?
There are two of us going, and our hotel does not provide breakfast/lunch etc.
Thanks

Food's really cheap there. I would say bring about 2-300quid each. Dont change your money here, bring all your pounds over and change it there for a better rate. This way u can change it as and when you need too.0

Good idea about changing money, thanks
Will it be an ok rate there to do that?
Also, when you say 2-300 quid, each, or per person?
Thanks again!

Just realised I worded that completely wrongly! That's what happens after a night out drinking lol... I meant to say each, or all together!

we went 2 years ago with work, didnt get to walk round much as it was so cold but the places we saw food seems expensive, we went back and ate at our hotel as it was the same price and it was expensive
probably cheaper places to eat but we couldnt find them in the cold

I guess it depends on what you mean as cheap? Like I had a v v gd 2 course+drinks meal at a nice restaurant for about 20 quid. Something of a similar standard will be at least 40quid here. I would say the cost of food is def similar to uk or cheaper.
You get more for your money where u change yr money there. So there's no harm in bringing more cash.0 -
That does sound good Orangemonkey, I was just wondering whether most retaurants were of a similar standard/price. Looked at the boat cruise and that seems to be about £25 too. Thanks

hi there i went to budapest for 4 days a couple of years ago and found there was a really wide range of restaurants but i agree you can have a nice meal for £20 the market was amazing so if you fancy making up a picnic? we went on a boat trip and enjoyed lovely views but the food was average I would recommend you visit the tourist office when you arrive because there are all sorts of deals if you buy a discount card which we only discovered half way through the week. Also we went to an hungarian cooking class held at a restaurant upstairs in the food market it wasn't expensive and we enjoyed eating our efforts for lunch. Enjoy I would go again0

I live about 2.5 hours away by train from Budapest just over the Hungarian border inside Austria and I have to say it is great few days I have every time I go there. Plenty of nice shopping malls to walk around if you fancy a bit of a wander around the shops - Westend / Mammut and always worth a walk up to the parliament building and along the river - lovely place. Look around for hotel prices because they can vary incredibly depending on where you book. The German shop "Tchibo" often does deals for 5 star hotels in Budapest - I booked to stay at the 5 star Carinthia Royal Grand with a Spa and pool for a few nights - offer is currently on here (German required): http://reisen.eduscho.at/index.php/travel/detail/13000?pct=home%2C%2Fsearch_result%2C
Price for 2 nights at most expensive part of the offer = 119 EUR (approximately 98 GBP, or 49 GBP a night)
- unlikely to get into a luxury 5 star hotel in a capital city in the UK for that price, especially not with a sauna, steam room, pool and free "hydrobath".
Most people would never think of doing this, but if you buy Hungarian train tickets you can pretty much get across the whole country for about 20 EUR (or the equivalent in forint) and the train ride to Györ and Sopron in the west of the country is a great way to see the whole country - flat, guaranteed seat and very enjoyable 2 hour journey across the flatlands!0
