new line, bt and sky

Hi,
I am moving into new premises. I need to get a new phone line. I would prefer not to go with BT and see if Sky would offer me something. However, as it is a new line do I need to go with BT at all or could sky install the line for me? I understand that there was a previous BT line into the premises so would presume Sky could take it up. Otherwise it is a case of me ringing BT getting the line in and then switching over to someone else. I want to avoid the 12 month contract with BT if possible which I presume comes as standard when you get a new connection.

If you get BT to install/reconnect the line, you will be tied to a 12 month contract.

OTOH, they're offering free connection at the moment.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

You can have any phone line with Sky, but if you want the free broadband with Sky you have to have a BT line

But can Sky do the line installation from scratch? There is an existing BT connection there but I do no want to phone BT to get there free offer and then be tied into them for 12 months with their cline rental charges etc when Sky seem to be offering free line rental for 12 months at the moment.

you cant lose by giving Sky a ring first to see if they do free installation too.
They do from time to time. Its amazing what you can get from them if you are going to be a customer. Make a list of what you want before yu ring, ie sky basic etc, lline rental, skytalk, broadband. You can actually have all that for £16.50 a month plus of course the £10 line rental. Actually its amazing sometime what you can get from them when you are a customer. I rang them to cancel something small late last year and they gave me benefits over a 3 month period worth £85.
I think I'll have to be ringing them again and pleading poverty lol

good luck and let us know how you get on.

  • This might sound like an odd question, kind of the opposite of the above:

If we went with Sky for a landline, as per the above, we have to have the TV service according to their site.

Has anyone tried getting them to install the phone line and not send someone round with the dish (e.g. just pay the cheapest TV package and never use/connect it?)

    Hi annie / laffer

You don't necessarily need a phone line from BT, but you do need a "compatible" BT line - i.e one that isn't LLU. You could get your line installed by the Post Office, for instance, who don't tie you in to a 12 month contract.

Good luck with Sky - if they can do it, that will be your cheapest option.

Yes it does, you have to stay with BT for 12 months THEN you can switch to Sky.
    I am currently with V/M phone and 2m broadband (£12.50 p/m) and
then sky seperate i decided not to switch to BT because of the tie in factor.(I was hoping to go on sky for everything)ie skytalk and broadband, but for 12months i would be worse off
never put off buying a bargain today,it may be gone tomorrow

Just an update for those that are curious. I rang Sky and they said that I had to go through BT for the line and yes that would mean I would be tied into a 12 month contract. I think I might just go to Virgin instead because it is a cabled area and hopefully if I combine phone, tv, broadband they might offer a deal. I hardly use the phone anyway!

    Hi,

I phoned SKY about a month ago to ask them the same question and they confirmed they could organise the first line installation on a new build for £25, There is a seperate number on the SKY website to call if you don't currently have a land line

Adam. Thanks. Do you know what the number is? There is a BT socket but I am not sure how active it was as the previous tenants went through Virgin for phone.
