Overwriting/typing - How do I switch it off?

I know it's not the most taxing of questions you'll have to answer on here  but this is driving me mad now.

I am writing word documents and every time I need to go back to change a bit, it is doing that annoying overwriting, making me have to type out whole sections again. I can't for the life of me remember how to switch it off, despite learning and using it every day at college, albeit a while ago :o I don't even know what causes it to suddenly start doing it, which doesn't help!

Anyone around to put me out of my misery???

TIA! :)
