http://shareme.com/details/ipig-wifi-hotspot-vpn-security.html - Not really ssh but close
http://blog.stevienova.com/2007/08/07/unprotected-wi-fi-encrypt-your-traffic-with-an-ssh-socks-proxy-to-browse-securely/ - very clearly written and even have stolen the picture
timbim, if your pc is compromised by an emailing keystroke logger, then you have no protection as you say https only protects the data sent for that session with the bank, If you are compromised before using a tunnel or VPN then that to offers no protection to a keystroke logger. your computer connection an all the other services are still vulnerable while surfing the bank. A boot CD containg all the software always wins to connect to and remote control your home PC, even thought it is not the most convienient to use/store data.
Remember to turn off your laptops bluetooth too. Encrypt the disk with the truecrypt.- it is free!
You can control your home PC via ssh an vnc from an iphone for free, same as above.GOOGLE it before you ask, you'll often save yourself a lot of time.

All seems a little over the top for a bit of surfing! SSH I can see for highly sensitive or confidential documents and large networks, but I think here it's taking a sledgehammer to crack a nut. Using linux would solve it!Ubuntu is an ancient African word, meaning: 'I can't configure Debian'.0
