capturing still images from hard drive recorder

Hello,
I have some footage recorded onto a hard drive recorder, and want to get some stills from it.
I have copied onto a dvd, but I *think* it loses a little quaity - could just be my interpretation though.
However, I cannot do print screen to take the images from the dvd off anyway... what is the best way to get the images from the hd recorder onto my computer as either short video clips or stills (or both!)?
thanks in advance!
