How to un-partition a laptop?

My dd has a laptop that she uses to play Sims and go online - its seem to have quite a big hard drive but we keep getting error messages that she is running out of space - when we had a look it seems there is a partition and a whole load of space left but we dont know how to access it. She wants to put more Sims stuff on but cant.
How can we get rid of this partition thing and be able to use all the space? (please note - not too techy minded so in simple words please!!!!)
