  • I bought the Remotec from Maplins - does pretty muuch everything, and to be honest, I can't see what you'd want to know that isn't in the manual!!! That said, as metioned above, it does have problems with some cable box functions. Mine is a Scientific Atlanta box and whilst it does the number keys fine, it's not so good with the arrow key functions.

For £25, I'd rather have had the Kameleon (and I'd have taken the Remotec back) but Currys have just confirmed it's scanning at £50...

I fancy the logitech harmony 525 (ie from komplett/amazon at around £52 all-in), but I'm not quite ready to spend that much.

I bought a SunXXXX touch screen remote last year. Did everything it said it would - easy to program, learn etc but it was unusable - too heavy, no tactile feeling etc. Shows how excellently designed the sky+ remote control is (just won't easily control the 5.1, dvd recorder, tv, video etc)

Agreed about how well designed the Sky+ remote is.

Incidentally, my life became a lot easier once I realised there *IS* a way to get the Sky+ remote volume control to control my home cinema amp volume (ie pressing the sky volume buttons directly controls my cinema amp's volume control). For those who might need a similar setup, take a look at this (has all the codes you need too)...

The lack of tactile feedback will be a problem with all touch-screen remote controls. It's not nice having to look at the box to see where to plonk your finger.

As to the keys wearing out - my goodness, you must watch a lot of TV!

Right arrived in the post this morning, having ordered it yesterday. So good service from Maplin.

First off, the unit comes supplied with batteries so don't buy any extra like I did (d'oh). The first thing I noticed was that it is a very sturdy unit. From the broken english in the manual and the product name (Remotec?!?) I was expecting poor build quality - but it is feels solid and is quite compact. My only gripe is that it is slightly too thick, but that is minor.

The device 'learnt' the functions for my Bush TV and Toshiba DVD/VCR combi straight away, however I did have to add a few functions from the original remotes that were either incorrect in the remote code or weren't present. I have to say that the feature to be able to learn remote codes from the original controls is extremely good and once you have gone through the lengthy programming process it really is a great device. (NB: It has non-volatile solid state memory in it, so taking out the batteries will not erase all your hard work in programming the unit).

The best thing about it is that it has programmable macro buttons. This means that you can program a series of events into 1 of 3 "Smart" keys that will perform those series of commands for you in one button press. So for example I have programmed my remote to turn on my TV, switch to the AV channel, turn on my DVD player and start playing a disk at the touch of a button. I have also programmed another of the smart keys to turn everything off. So, for example, if I am in bed and get tired watching a DVD I can press that one button and everything gets stopped and turned off automatically.

The backlight is clear and readable in low-light conditions and is a nice feature.

My biggest problems with the remote are 1) The remote beeps in confirmation every time you press a button. It is extremely annoying and I'm trying to find a way to stop it. 2) Some categories (DVD, TV, VCR, Satellite etc.) just don't have enough touch screen buttons for really complex remotes. For example my DVD remote has buttons for "Angle", "Zoom", "Slow-mo", "Frame-advance" etc. features that are not present in the presets for Toshiba and cannot all be learnt to the remote as there aren't enough buttons to program them all into.

All in all a good product, worth £20 but works more as a convergence of all your remotes and not a true replacement for the originals. It is perfect for performing regular everyday functions and its great for its macro feature but it can be let down in its lack of capacity.

akabee, which store was that in?

If you are there again and they are still £24.99 then please let me know. I might get you to buy one for me and post it. Ther will be a pint in it for you if you'd be so kind!!!

I have never found any learning or one 4 all remote to be satisfactory.
They are all flawed in some way or the other.

I have a Philips Pronto remote which cost £200 a few years ago but prefer to use the originals, as I found it too fiddly to program, and keep swapping between devices. I might see what else is out there one day, but for now I prefer the original remotes.
