radio that we have never really got to work fully. think it limited itself to some kind of frequency. does anyone know how this might work? thanks

Replace it with a UK spec radio

If you have an English langiuage manual for it (or Google for one) check that there is not a region setting availble so as to get the UK frequency range. The FM radio on my Nokia phone for example, has Japan and Other Regions settings on the radio.

I would just replace it - I got a car stereo with radio, cd player and mp3 player with an SD card slot for less than £30 from aldi and it is fine!
