I'd say all you need is a rolling pin, a few baking tins, a bowl, whisk and some ingredients :) even a food processor isn't always necessary

If you get hold of a muffin tray, you can put fairy cases in it so you'll only need the one tray to start off with. You can also do tray bakes in a roasting tin. Bread pudding in a small lasagne type pyrex.

I confess I only use my FP for making pastry as I CBA to rub the flour and marg by hand :o
I don't even get out my vintage Kenwood mixer these days, use a cheapie hand whisk - works perfectly well :o

    Hi

Think a bit wider than that

    1. Flapjack is ridiculously easy to make and is cheap as a snack/treat/take to work option.

    2. Crumble mix is also very easy to make and keeps in the fridge for a bit. Quick and easy pud twice a week with different fruit?

    3. When you get to pastry, make a pie case (or little ones) that can be kept in a tin. Add eggs and anyone of a mass of alternative veggies andother filling and you have a quiche, bacon and egg pie etc. Mins make good lunches.

or learn how to make real lemon merange (sp) pie
If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing
  • Thanks for those ideas

Quiche would be good, can always freeze!

Its just me 5 days out of 7 so I dont want to go too barmy with the baking, I have a tiny appetite..so will pass the treats to oh and kids :)

I bake loads and don't have a food processor! I do have lots of cake tins and pie dishes but the ones that get 90% of the use are the 8" springform cake tin, the 10" silicone pie dish (makes it LOADS easier to get the pie out of the dish than a metal one) and a loaf tin. Digital scales are fabulous, and I love silicone spatulas too - even though a wooden spoon does almost the same job.

However, I use the cheapest flimsiest baking sheets I can find for biscuits, especially shortbread - heavier ones conduct too much heat and burn them on the bottom. I have 12p tesco value baking sheets that are barely thicker than tinfoil and they do a great job.

Gingerbread is a good one to start with - it smells gorgeous in the oven, keeps well and usually has a straightforward "melt stuff, stir other stuff in" recipe.

    Hi Rebekah,

As your thread has now dropped down the board I've added it to the existing one on baking basics to keep the suggestions together.
