Hi there
After finally persuading my mum she should she if she was eligible for attendance allowance she eventually got round to filling in the forms (with much help from a great lady:T). She has heard back and they have told her she is entitled to the higher rate allowance. With this are you able to automatically get any other benefits i.e. free dental care, opticians, winter fuel allowance etc?
Thank you in anticipation.

Hi TPA
Your mum should check whether she is entitled to any help with housing and council tax benefit due to the AA award. It would probably be best if she went to the CAB or Age Concern and asked someone to check her benefit entitlement.
Good luck0 -
Thank you both, she lives with my Dad, mum is 70 he is 64. They do not get any other allowances. It would be great if she could get help with the opticians, she is forever loosing her glasses (forgetfulness is part and parcel of her disability). As we are in Wales we are lucky and already get free prescriptions.MFW - We've only gone and blooming done it!May 2013:j0

Just to clarify, it depends on whether your father meets the earnings criteria for carers allowance, and in any case this benefit stops once he starts to claim his own state pension. More info here........

Was the great lady who helped to fill in the forms an advisor? If so, ask her to go through their situation and see what else they might be entitled to.
If she can't do it, ask your local council's Welfare Officers, the Pension Service advisors or Age Concern to check through for them.0 -
Blue badge entitlement??? Easy parking? Forms usually available at the local library . some GPs stock them. If AA has been granted due to mental health problems eg dementia, ask the LA for her to be "discounted " for council tax purposes. Your dad would be treated as if he lived alone and would get a 25% discount off council tax, because mentally ill people on middle // high care of DLA/ AA suddenly become "invisible"!! *(But you have to tell them) Is a special room set aside for mum's treatment- a sick room ?- ask about disability reductions on council tax - possibly C Tax can be reduced by one band without having to go thro a means test. Some LA's don't know the rules and will say you have to be on dialysis, have an extra bathroom... they can be challenged thro a welfare rights officer/ cab. More help from Social services . Commun ity care assessment? Day care? Ambulance to hospital - see GP? Just a few quick thoughts. Hope this helps.0
