Cutting a VW key

I lost one of my car keys to a VW Polo so enquired about getting a replacement cut. VW told me to cut it costs £14 and to code it costs £64 (i have a bog standard key with no buttons and my car has a standard immobiliser ).

Anyone know anyone else apart from VW that i can get it cut with and coded as £78 for a key is outrageous!

I've moved your thread to the 'Motoring & Public Transport' board, where it should get more views and responses.

That's pretty good value i think, my dad got quoted something like £150 when he thought he'd lost the spare key to his VW Passat.

Have a search on some VW forums to see if there is a way to code the key yourself (try the car handbook as well). Alternatively try a locksmith. My dry-cleaner does keys and has branched into car keys as well. I'm sure he's cheaper than VW!

VW are awful with keys. My battery in my Passat key went flat and they wanted £30 or something to change it... I bought a battery myself for under £1 and had it changed in about 10 seconds...!
  • If its a standard key (ie not the one with the laser slot cut into the side like mine) then you might get this cut in timpsons (for about £30) as they can clone the transponder chip. Unfortunately for me, my polo came with the laser cut key and I had to pay VW £95 for that! and that's for a 7 year old banger :-(
