I'd reformat it, have a look at http://www.howtohaven.com/system/createwindowssetupdisk.shtml for making your own XP CD's

That could be a little difficult on the laptop, as the screen is broken and sometimes takes charge.

I could try to charge it fully, and plug in an external monitor.

I don't know about HP ones :p it all depends if they are a windows xp cd like the dell ones are or if they use ghost and image it. The latter won't work on different systems. :(

The is another option instead of buying an OEM version from ebay, as he already has an OS that is technically paid for and all they need is a xp pro cd, why not download a xp pro cd and burn the iso file to a cd, that someone has uploaded and posted links to on a forum, and use his CODE when installing.
ok, not 100% legal, but as its the code 25 digits that makes the OS registered/activated and the cd is just data.

He could ask a family member to create a iso image of their xp pro cd and send it to him via a filesharing service. mediafire, rapidshare, megaupload, + others, if his family is far away from him.

On another NOTE, the desktop PC does that have a recovery disc or a xp pro cd, as they said about reinstalling the os. recovery disc would restore the hard drive back to factory fresh, and then change the key to the new key using my previous post.

Most of the time these ISO' of Windows XP have viruses on them.

It shouldn't matter if this is possible technically - it's not permitted by the license agreement.. Why are we giving advice on piracy?

    Fonz,

Im unsure about piracy, but as i bought the laptop new, and it came with windows XP, then i own this copy of XP and therefore should be able to use it on any PC i use, being that it be only 1 PC. As the laptop cannot be used, this does not mean that i lose my copy of windows XP.

The question i am asking, is how to use this copy of XP onto another computer i have purchased, which does not have a copy of XP registered.

As said here, if it was a Dell computer, i could simply install the software and register the key with the software.

I might give microsoft a telephone call tomorrow and ask them what to do. They might ship me a software disk out, or advise me on what to do.

From this quote and your statement about having 3 disks (MS XP comes on 1), then you have the manufacturers OEM version which dies when the computer dies.

What does the COA label say? You don't need to give the number.
    Move along, nothing to see.

As said NO you cannot do it at all never, you cant use the 3CDs that came with the PC on another PC and you cant transfer the Hard Drive either, youll have to get a copy of XP (borrow it if you must) but youll have to get your own COA.

Why when he already has a coa?
I think you are being moral and what you mean is that he should get his own coa but in practical terms there is nothing to stop him using his old coa.

Get an oem copy of Xp pro and get it loaded and activated.
