Money taken from my bank account without any authority.

I joined Greens fitness club and 6 months later my partner joined. I then noticed that her membership fees were being taken from my account without me having agreed to it.
I instructed Greens to stop taking the funds and for 1 month it stopped - it then started and continued for another 5 months without my consent. I contacted the bank and they said Greens had electronically produced another debit after I'd cancelled any payments to them which had nothing to do with them. I argued that they should not have allowed payments without authourity - they said companies can do this by electronic means. To me money taken without authourity is theft and devising methods to extract money without any legal authority is fraud.
Greens are dismissive about my complaint.
Grateful for any comment/advice

It probably says in the fine print of your terms and conditions that you have gone from an individual membership to a joint membership so they would say they have the right to amend the DD. This should have been clearly explained to you if that were the case. You need to read the small print closely then get some advice about how to reclaim the charges. CAB might be able to advise, or you could get a free half hour appointment with a local solicitor to see if you can do something through the Small Claims court.
In any case, sounds like you should wave goodbye to Greens and take your business elsewhere.

A further note - this post appeared on the Old style thread, maybe one of the powers that be could shift it to a more appropriate forum?

When your partner joined did she sigh up for her own DD and was it taken at the same time as an amount was taken from your account?

If they stopped taking money from her account then she should make enquiries of them as well. If they didn't then they are taking a double amount and that needs to be investigated by them.
