Not enthusiastic about dress shopping - am I mad?

Its a little under a year away till I get married and my sister(MOH) and my other bridesmaids are badgering me to book appointments at bridal shops to try on some dresses.
The thing is I am not enthusiastic about this at all. I know I still have a while before I need to do this, but I cant seem to get excited about it. I am a girly girl - but I dont know why I'm not excited about going.
I dont know if its because I only have a £300 dress budget, because the shops seem daunting with snotty assistants who will laugh me and my budget out of the shop, I dont know why.
I have been losing weight since the end of Jan and lost 2stone, going from a size 18 to a 16 but i still feel really big and I know I will lose more weight so I dont know when to go dress shopping as I still have another 2 stone to lose.
I enjoy looking at other peoples dresses and have chosen the bridesmaids dresses from Landy, just need to find a stockist so they can try them on first.
I think I will get my dress from landy, but i know i need to try on different styles first to see what suits. I just cant get my self motivated to go.
Did anyone else feel like this before shopping for the dress?:o

dont know if it helps but it seems form what you said that you have been well motivated with your diet but if you shop for a dress now it might stop the diet form progressing, you would rather shop for one when you feel your weight is better and you feel you look nice?0

No you aren't alone,I am really not looking forward to it for exactly the same reasons as you. I went to a bridal fair the other day and a lady made me book an appointment there and then. I am lucky cos this shop has won lots of awards and most sizes are 16+ for their samples so i know i'll be ok.
What actually has sorted me out a little was going to oxfam bridal - i was left to just try on dresses on my own, and even though my weight isnt where I want it to be, when I looked in the mirror i realised i didn't look bad at all - and i know my h2b will think i look gorgeous walking down the aisle in a white bin bag!!
Budget is a worry - i have a £300 budget for me and my bridesmaid!! I'm getting my dress from landy so I feel bad about trying dresses on, although if i do find a dress around the £500 mark that is amazing then I am prepared to blow my budgetHad a thrifty wedding 17-06-10

maybe you are also feeling pressurised form other peolples views and you need some time alone to get an idea of styles and prices before other people start advising you as well0

Trying on too many different styles will leave you reeling, I guarantee that. The amount of brides who came into Pronuptia when I worked there and left after trying on six or seven styles, had less of an idea when they left to when they came in. Disappointment was immediate and it shouldn’t have been.
The fact that you are planning on losing more weight and changing your body shape is extremely important when choosing your dress, as a style that suits your shape now may not be right on your slimmer frame. This may be the reason for some of the reservations you have. There may be "bits" of you which you are not entirely happy about which can leave you feeling a little insecure. Worrying about what the assistant may say (and I'd be disgusted if they did because everyone should be treated with the same respect and courtesy because they want your money) could also worry you leaving you even more insecure, more unhappy and more stressed out and frustrated.
When I was an assistant I felt it was a privelige to be involved in such a wonderful time in a lady's life. Now though, it seems they just want the sale. Why not go into a few shops just to look and not try. See how the sales assistant is with you. If she makes you feel welcome and comfortable, then when you are ready to try, go back to her.
I'm sure everything will be fine and once you get into it, you will love it. A light lunch with some friends, a glass of bubbly for a little "courage" Of course it's a worry, it's a big deal and everyone deals with it in their own unique way.
Good luck in your quest. xx0 -
I'm not scared that my diet will stop progressing as I know I have the motivation to lose the rest of my weight, we go to the Dominican is September so I want the weight well off by then. I just dont want to leave it too late to sort one but then I dont want to pay a fortune to have it altered either.
I know trying too many different styles will confuse me even more but I dont know if this is also a concern because there are so many dresses and being a Liberian I am indecisive anyway.
Thanks for the replys.0 -
No matter what size a lady is she looks gorgeous and in a wedding dress she looks even more beautiful so I think you are worrying about your size unessasarily. Im an 18 and love my curves, i've got 5 bridesmaid, 3 are children but the 2 adults are 22 and 24, we are thinking of walking into the ceromony to Fat Bottem Girls by Queen (to lighten the atmosphere.) because we are gorgeous and because we are confident enough to do it. Your h2b loves you and m sure he wouldnt want you beating yourself up about your weight. I would also ring any shops you are going to and explain that you are coming and check that they will have dresses suitable. I popped into my local one and explained about my 2 bm's and my size and they said it would not be a prob at all.
I do hwever empathise with the budget side of things, im desp trying to sell stuff on Ebay so I can get my dress from Landy, im doing well and so far have £150 but I feel really guilty about going to shops and trying on dresses knowing full well that im not buying from them. I'm worried its going to be written all over my face.
Good luck xx0 -
Go alone! Then you dont have to listen to other peoples opinions on what they think will suit you, you can just potter and pick things you like the look of

I was exactly the same. I wasn't sure why I felt like that but on one occassion my mum asked me to have a look in a bridal shop when we walked past and I felt all overwhelmed and wanted to get out as soon as possible! The sales assisstant kept telling me that I would suit all these resses and I just wanted her to go away! I know it wasn't her fault but I felt really stange. However a few months later I decided I would go to another shop with my mum and try some on and that was a different experience. I still felt a bit weird beforehand and was not excited but that changed when I started trying dresses on. I decided I would go in with a completely open mind and try on dreses that I didn't think I would go for. The shop I went to had dresses to suit all budgets and the first one I tried on ended up being the one! I hope you find something amazing! I'm sure you will x x
Finally decided to start growing up when it comes to money!:j

Thank goodness for that i'm not alone! I was just contemplating making a new post similar to this when I found yours.
Whilst I am not very fat I am overweight but very short. I was worrying about my bum and alsorts. I went dress shopping for the first time yesterday. I was quite nervous and didn't know at all what to expect. I tried on 5 dresses I liked from the sale rail (Do ring first tell them your size and ask if they have any on the sale rail) and I came away with a list of the dresses I liked. I am currently looking online to see if they are on Landy Bridal website and I might just order straight from China! I was pleased that I could try dresses on just to get a feel for them. And I found out what suited me more and what looked silly because i'm too short.0
