Indian Call Centres

I've been harrassed to death for the past year with phone calls from an Indian Call Centre representing T-mobile. They keep phoning me up telling me I have qualified for a "free" mobile phone - of course, it's not exactly free and you have to sign up to a contract.

I have told them repeatedly to stop calling me and remove me from their lists, but the calls continue. I have now sent an email to T-mobile registering a complaint and telling them to remove me from their marketing lists. I am aware that you can register with the telephone preference centre for this purpose, but my understanding is that it does not work with overseas callers.

If the calls continue after I receive a response from T-mobile, my intention is to inform them that I intend to charge them a £20 fee for every call I receive from their marketing teams. Does anyone know whether I can get away with this legally? I don't see why we shouldn't be able to charge these companies for our time, as they can charge us for theirs.

  • Hi
I registered with the telephone preference service and it was amazing, calls stopped almost instantly, and I was getting calls from France, Russia and god knows where.........
I know how you feel it was driving me mad too, always happened dead on 6 clock.
Anyway try them and see, can't do any harm.

I get those calls on my business. They used to annoy me intensely, but now I highly enjoy wasting their time stringing them along with some ridiculous story. Let them pay for the overseas call rates, I say.

Sometimes call companies are not allowed to sell to businesses, so if you tell them they are calling a business number, they might leave you alone. Worth a try, anyway.

Failing that, the preferences service is good.
Sometimes I feel like a pelican. Whichever way I turn, I've still got an enormous bill in front of me.

Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

Hey, someone has removed the adjective from my topic title!! It doesn't have the same ring to it now.

That's okay if you sleep at normal hours. Wait until you work nightshift and you're constantly being awakened during the day by !!!!!! trying to sell you stuff you don't want.

I don't sleep at normal hours. :) I do work the nightshift, and I turn the ringer off of my landline phone when I am asleep and leave the answering machine on. Only my mobile is on audible, so I know I will only get calls that are worth being woken up for, like friends, family etc

How can you be sure that they are calling from T-Mobile and not a T-Mobile dealer? It's common for 'dealers' to ring claiming to be from or rather not explaining that they are not calling from a telco.

As far as TPS goes, it's right that overseas companies (and call centres) don't have to screen against it, but I think that any 'right thinking' UK company operating from abroad will screen against it.

The legislation has now changed to include overseas call centres working on behalf of a UK registered company.

Register for TPS as it works and if still having problems get the company name that is calling you and report it to Ofcom. Agents/dealers working on behalf of companies such as tmobile will not remain agents if tmobile are fined £10K for non compliance!

Hi there - just a quick thought - I feel that with offshore call centres the language/accent/cultural barrier prevents proper customer service being delivered. I banked with HSBC and after two attempts to resolve a problem with me not being able to fully understand the person and the person the other end of the line not being able to understand me (with a Leicester accent - me duck!) I decided enough was enough!
I changed banks to the co-op bank who has 24/7 UK call centres and will not deal with any company who uses offshore call centres.
If we all did this then maybe things would change!
