Flying to NY at Xmas - 2 flight query

Hi

we're thinking about going to the States at Christmas and the cheapest flights to the US are currently £350 with Aer Lingus, changing at Dublin. Now, if I book the same flights separately (eg London to Dublin, then Dublin to New york) this works out about £70 less! Anyone know why this should be, and if there's a reason for not booking each flight separately?

Also, I'm assuming that if we book now it'll be a lot cheaper but does anyone have experience of booking later in the year and getting flights cheaper?

all advice gratefully received!

thanks

vicky

It is cheapest to fly on Dec 25, but £350 seems pretty good for this time of year.

well, we want to be there for Christmas Day so that's not an option - and I can't take too much time off pre-christmas otherwise yes, travelling on 15 December would be great. But we'll probably fly back on NYE as that's also a cheap time to fly!

wish I could get to the bottom of this two flights booked separately being cheaper than one, though...

Quite simple really - if you book the tickets separately & the first flight is late & you miss your connection you do not have a right to be put on the next available flight to NY

We have gone to NY the last 2 years at Xmas time, both times we have found a hotel and flight package form Harry Shaw the best value for money.

Flights with Continental and hotels of a high standard in Manhattan (Rosseveldt & Helmesley both next to Grand Central Station)
