You can format D no problem. It wont effect drive C in any way

But, triple check it is "D" you are about to format!!

Well when i open the my computer, the C: and D: come up.

The computer actually has 1 hard drive, and its partitioned i believe as its 40GB.

Ive gone in through admistrator tools, as per the picture in post 1.

So, if i right click, format to NTFS, this will free up the 17GB on the computer, as its currently as RAW data.

Correct: But it will 17Gb as a "D" drive not as part of "C". So you'll have to decide what you want to put there... (e.g. iTunes library, all those photos, whatever).

    Cheers!

As an alternative that disk management tool you've screenshotted supports deleting the D: partition entirely and expanding the C: to use all the disk.

There are advantages with havig a data partition seperate from the boot drive but with a disk that small it probably isn't worth having 2 partitions.

If you look at the screenshot, D: has no filesystem, so its not formatted. Which means you should format it in NTFS as its a 17gb volume.

It will not affect C: in any way.

Id use SWISSKNIFE to format personally as it analyses the partition first
