House Deeds - guidance of keeping safe ??

 Have been reading through a few threads and am getting the gist that maybe it's not such a good idea to pay of a mortgage completely - thus providing somewhere safe to keep Deeds? We are just about to pay off our mortgage and this hadn't even occured to me ( dim or what ?)!! Is this something we really should consider? Is it really not worth paying off this encumberance simply to provide a source of safety for our property Deeds? Any advice is so very much appreciated. Thank you. :o

Most properties are now registered with the Land Registry. If this is so the deeds have only historical interest. In which case photocopy them, give one copy to a friend and put the originals under your mattress.

Or just pay off the mortgage except for £1. Let the lender keep your deeds if you are worried. Not sure why you are worried though.

Many lenders (for example Nationwide) now send you the deeds irrespective of how much is outstanding on the mortgage whether you want them or not.

Personally, I'd rather have the deeds. Shows I actually own the property (not the lender)

As aforementioned, you will be registered as the owner on the land registry, so it doesn't really matter anyway.
