If you are going to Luxor The Mecure (used to be Etap) is pretty well situated on the Corniche. The Sheraton in Luxor is very pleasant right on the river bank, but its a long way out of town.

    eygpt

thats the link (if it works!) to our experience of Eygpt. It was the best ever holiday, but one word of caution, it is a very unclean place (meaning their way of life is sooo different to ours), check out the hygiene of the place they stay at, but i'm sure Eygpt is improving this all the time???

This would probably be perfect. We stayed here last FEbruary. Hotel is 5* but you can possibly book it on lastminute.com at a lower rate than generally advertised. Hayes and Jarvis had a wonderful rep there who was most helpful and not in any way pushy or trying to sell trips.
It's got a lovely choice of restaurants, including fabulous Egyptian food at v cheap prices. Lovely rooms too - my husband's a bit claustrophobic and I mentioned this to them when I booked, simply asking for as large a room as possible on the standard rate and they actually upgraded us to a suite. NOthing was too much trouble. Lovely pool which gets the sun most of the day (unlike most of the other hotels) and central, and you can have trips on the Nile directly from the hotel jetty. Wonderful views too - highly recommend!!

Just been to Egypt as part of a cruise deal. Might be something to look at for a 60th birthday. Was great to see all the sights but back to the comfort of the cruise ship and then on to other places such as Athens, Crete, Turkey, Cyprus etc.
There are three ways to get something done; do it yourself, hire someone or forbid your kids to do it.
