Selling a ring - on eBay?

Hi everyone,

I just wondered if anyone could offer me any advice about selling an engagment ring on eBay? The ring cost £850 and I don't expect to sell it for nearly as much but I'd like to get a decent amount!

I've never sold jewellery before so I don't really know what to do to get the most for it? Is eBay a good place to sell it?

Thanks,
Rachel

I presume as it's an engagement ring it's got a diamond? If so, I wouldn't sell it on ebay unless there's certification for the diamond (grade, etc)...that's just me, though. You could try taking it to an independent jeweler, but in all honesty if diamonds aren't sold new then their value can drop quite staggeringly (unless you're talking about a really impressive diamond). Re-sale potential of diamond jewelry can be quite poor...

Anyhow, wait and see what other users on here say. I haven't worked in the jewelry industry for a few years now, so may be behind the times :)

Interesting thread i have an old ring an ex bought fire opals and sapphires in a flower shape. I have been toying with selling it but where to get the best price.
  • Sorry, yes it is a diamond engagment ring! Thanks for your comments, I'll have to lower my expectations! The money will be put to good use - I'd put it towards the house deposit I'm saving up :cheesy:

I sold my engagement ring from my first marriage on ebay for £50- cost £350 originally. It was a sapphire with 2 miniscule diamonds, just to give you an idea. I was happy with that- to be honest I just wanted rid of it.

I have sold loads of gold jewellery on Ebay although admittedly not diamonds. I was very happy with the money I received for my gold. What I would do is decide that absolute lowest I would be happy with and start the bidding there.

Or take it to a pawn broker first and see what he would offer. Anything above that would be good.

Be sure to send via trackable mail, insured to the total cost of the ring.

Have a look at the completed listings of any similar rings (if there is any), to get an idea of what it might go for on ebay?
