Second the rec for Alla we used her for custom 2 days off a cruise May 2006.

We did St. Petersburg on our own with just the help of the Lonely Planet guide book.We had no problems. We also did Moscow the same way.

unfortunately i am trying to organize for two elderly relatives who would not suit being on their own with lonely planet'! they do not want to be part of a group, (which would make my life easier and bring costs down as i could just book with one of the big agents) because they don't want to be confined to a certain time-table. if anyone else has further info or recommendations i'd be very grateful. have googled and got a few leads but there's nothing like the personal advice and experience you can get here!
    best wishes

  • My husband and I are going on a Baltic cruise in June/July next year. We will be in St Petersburg for 2 days and would appreciate some advice on tours and visas. We could do an organised tour with the cruise but that would mean only 1 day in the city. Also we are unsure if we require visas and how much they cost. Thanks.

Hi, we went with Royal Caribean last year to St Petersburgh and did a 2 day tour with Alla Tours which was exceptional.:j
Have you looked on cruise critic and joined the roll call for your cruise as you may find others are wanting to do the same. When we went we palled up with another couple and ending up doing other tours as well with them. If you want anymore information just let me know. Radders

I was just going to suggest you look at the Forums on Cruise Critic as well

we made up a party of 12 and went with TJ Travel for a 2 day tour , they were excellent.

No payment beforehand, we paid on the second day, they organised our Visas and were waiting for us as we came off the ship.
Our guide and driver were excellent and we had flexibility to do what we wanted.
I really wanted to see the Subway and asked, so our guide got the driver to drop us at a station, she bought the tickets, we rode for two stops and the driver was there when we got off.
We wanted more time at L'Hermitage and that was no problem, whereas you will not get that flexibility with a Ships tour.
Our tour worked out cheaper than Ships tour which was even better :j

St Petersburg is amazing, you will love it.
