Part time work and benefits

I'm unemployed and currently staying with a parent but looking into renting a 1 bedroom flat on my own. Im also possibly starting a part time job at 24 hours per week on minimum wage soon. Ive been told that I'll get no help with Housing Benfit or Council Tax, making it impossible to do both. Surely this is wrong and I should get some benefits ?

Have you put the figures into the calculator?

Why don't you wait to move out until you have a full time job and can afford your own place? How old are you?
  • Far too old to be staying with a parent, and full time work doesnt look likely in the near future. The problem is that noone can give me a straight answer. It seems that I have to rent a house first, THEN find out if I'll get housing and councilt tax benefits. Id still be willing to do a part-time job even if Im no better off, as long as Im not worse off. Which calculator by the way ?

My local council website has a housing benefit calculator, maybe you could see if yours does. It lets you put in predicted earnings and rents etc and calculates payments for you.

    Hi,

Have a look on entitledto.co.uk, it will advise you what you are entitled to claim and how to go about applying. You just need to enter your income details and situation.

    Hope this helps

A house, you must be joking!

If you're under 25 you might be eligible for the rent of a room in shared accommodation, if you're over 25 it goes up to the rate for a 1 bed flat.
  • Yes, I meant to write a 1 bedroom flat of course, not a house.

If you are over 25 then you should get the 25% reduction in council tax as a sole occupant of a flat.
