I need a new phone, cordless so I can move it around and not too expensive. I know nothing about new technology so thought someone here may help.

I am looking at Argos they have two phones Binatone 9 hrs talk time(don't know exactly what that means) 100 hours standby for £27.95. I don't need an answer machine as I have bt answer, any advice please?

Take a (small) chance on ebay and pay far less.

You want DECT (digital enhanced cordless telephony).

I bought (for £1.70 + £6.95 p&p) a Cable and Wireless branded CW4901 twin set with answering machine (and saved my callers wasting 5p or 5.5p when I'm engaged on a call by dumping 1571 and getting a proper answering machine again).

    The NTL D5901 is identical.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

Thanks Heinz sounds good but I've never had anything to do with ebay and am a bit nervous about it as I have read some stories of money going lost and goods not reveived etc.

Which was why I used the '(small) chance' phrase.

I have to say though it's never happened to me (Paypal is very secure) and, if you pick your seller according to their feedback record (as I did with those 2 links above), you reduce the risk.

Had a look now and have read some of the 'orchid diallers' thread. Seems very complicated to me and I would also have to pay the £9.99 for the dialler as well as £29.99 (minus 20% discount I know).

I don't use any of the 188 numbers I am with BT for line rental and Toucan for calls.

No, those handsets incorporate the dialler.
