Document on old computer

Its a bit pathetic but I have forgotten how to correct certain document
problems on my old computer. Its a Dell desktop with XP. I typed a couple of documents a week ago and they looked fine. I even ran one off and it printed
normally. One is in Wordpad and the other in Notepad. Today when I needed more copies both documents contain strange symbols and letter codes at the end of each line. I think something on one of the drop down menus has been ticked in error but it all looks OK to me. What will have caused this? Does anyone know? I can't re-do one of them as it is a statement and must look the same as the original I ran off.

Sounds like you are trying to open the file you cretaed with WordPad in Notepad.
They are both text editors but WordPad contains limited formating.
Open the files in WordPad - you dont need to use two editors!
Alternatively if you have Word use that instead.
Or download OpenOffice, which is free and contains a fully funtional document editor called writer.0 -
Thank you JCB. I will have another go at it. The printer is next to the Dell
desktop upstairs or I would have used my laptop which I keep downstairs (got a problem with stairs). The Dell is extremely slow and to improve things last year I deleted a number of programmes including Office and also Open Office I think. Also, when I now print off the document it comes out as -
one very long line a bit like this but with more text etc etc and then a
like this etc etc short one
long............................................................................
short...............
Not to worry, I'll work it out or retype them.0 -
For the second problem, it looks like you may have Format, Word Wrap turned on in Notepad.
If you turn it off you should get longer, complete lines.0
