A little story about companies not giving a toss, and not letting people know.

Once upon a time I was a Project Manager for a bank, and my job this week was to spec costs for a particular project. One of the companies concerned was on my list of candidates, and they were VERY eager (a bit like recruitment agencies when you advertise a job).

Suffice to say that that company wasn't chosen because they'd messed me about in the past when I applied for a job with them. They were also starting to get my back up a bit with constantly phoning.

It only cost them oh, about £250k.

Claire2831 - Thanks for your reply. It does seem to be the public sector jobs which take for ever. Any private sector jobs I've applied for have had a very quick turn around!! Good luck with your application...hope it doesn't take as long as the six weeks they have specified!

ts_aly2000 - Your story made me laugh. You certainly taught that company a lesson!!

I applied for three jobs with my local Council each with the same closing date of the 17th April. I have had one rejection email but haven't heard back from the other two. Do you think this is because they are still short-listing? It's 3 weeks since the job closed so surely I would have heard by now. It just seems strange that out of the three I've only had one rejection email. Do you think its worth contacting them?

    Thanks

I gotta say any council jobs i've applied for have always replied - yes sometimes after 6 weeks but always get a reply. Though after reading some on here, clearly many are utter pants.
I applied for 3 jobs within about 10 days of each other back at the start of march, had 2 letters within 1-2 weeks after the closing date to say they wouldn't be filling the posts, and had one letter with an interview offer recieved last week- This application closed on march 13th and when I got the letter it was dated 28th April.

On one occasion I had a job int with a different council, I had a letter saying "sorry but..." within about 10 days of the interview which i think is acceptable, buuuuuuuuut on the other hand a job i went for early last year I had a letter with a job offer after 3 weeks of the interview!

Proof that you just never know!!

I have emailed and asked if they recieved my application that kinda thing before mind, don't think it's a problem, either they'll make the effort or not!
Debt which IS NOW GONE before 31.12.2011: CC - GONE!!! :j Loan: GONE!! :j

  • just to add my bit, I've been applying for jobs at the university here where I live, so far I have been lucky, for the 4 I've applied for, I've been offered interviews. 2 have already passed, 1 a few months ago.......... even though they said they would call the following week, never heard from them and to top it all they have re-advertised the job. The other one I had last Thursday, again said I would hear very soon......... again nothing. I have an interview next week, this will be literally 2 months after the closing date!! And then the other interview is on the 21st.

Like a few people on here, I get really annoyed when they say they'll get back and don't, a curtious (sp?) email would be fine, especially as the university is a very large well known one.

After about 5 days can you chase up whether you get the job or not? Or does this ruin your chances?

Do you really need to do it? I certainly can't see how it will improve your chances.

Not to stick up for companies not notifying unsuccessful applicants, but most are interviewing a lot of people and its hard to get the time to write or call them all. I know because I have been there.

I have only ever been contacted by a company if I have failed the interview. I have never been contacted if I have not made it to the interview stage. I can understand companies not contacting people. The last post we advertised attracted 1100 applicants. Over half didn't have emails so it would have cost us a small fortune to phone/write to the applicant (it's a not for profit place and we have a very tight budget). Even with emails it would taken blooming ages and we are short-staffed.

As a small construction company we recently had over 50 people apply for the labourers position, that was only advertised for 2 days, the job centre who we advertise with advised us just to reply to those who had provided email addresses due to the cost of postage. A couple did phone to check that we had received their application form, which was fine by me and i put a noted that they had called. I think the job centre must make some apply because when i contact them they don't want the job or just don't turn up in the morning. We usually want people to start within the next few days after the job is advertised. I think its fine to wait a week after the closing date to phone and check they received your application. Years ago my brother nearly missed out on a very good job, until my mum made him check they had received his form, that hadn't so he quickly did it again and he got the job, still there, doing well.
