Hi
we had a power cut yesterday, seems we now have many computer problems, noticed a program called pc defender had an icon on desk top - anybody know what this probram is?
anyway spent ages trying to sort this out, pc seems to hang on pentium 4 logo for around 4 mins then goes through booting windows, then log on screen, connects to internet via safari and now apparently according to o/h (I am at work) via IE....
the PC then hangs after a while, ran AVG and found some issues which I think have been resolved,
question is am I better off reformating drive and reinstalling windows from new?
next question am I right in thinking if my drive is partioned then files on the non OS partition will be safe?
the wireless connection is working fine, so the internet connection obviously works...
driving me nuts :-)

Firstly, AVG doesn't have a very good reputation at the moment. In your position I would go through the malware/spyware removal guide in the stickies at the top of the Tech section.
Secondly, the non OS partition may not be safe, because some existing malware programs will attempt to copy themselves onto all mounted volumes - including things like USB pendrives that get plugged in while it's infected.
Having said that, a proper malware scan ~should~ identify any problems on the second partition.0 -
Id personally download AVIRA and scan all the files on the other partition BEFORE you format and reinstall windows:idea:0

HI
intalled avira, ran and found lots of problems - had to run it in safe mode as when booting normally the pc gets to user log in, type in p/w and then it hangs and goes no further - on the odd occasion it gets past this it then just has the egg timer showing on the desk top
on starting in safe mode I can get on the internet etc the only thing that pops up is a windows pishing filter

any ideas?

Might as well run the windows installer then and make cleaning drive D the priority as soon as you can:idea:0

right I have now managed to run virus checker and adaware in safe mode and normal mode, both reporting no issues
however I was attempting to run error checking on the C drive and it won't allow me to run - when I did this in safe mode and it wouldn't let me I assumed, incorrectly, that this was due to being in safe mode
it says window is unable to start this operation any idea what the problem could be???
c drive/properties/tools/error checking - checking both options

Click DO A SCAN AND SAVE A LOGFILE (Takes seconds) then post the log so we can see whats running
