Memory Probs. Installed ok but conflict?

Got a 2 GB kit from Crucial (2 x 1GB) for main pc. There were 2 x 512 sticks in pc already.

Installed fine and pc recognised that there's now 3 GB mem there, but the speed is being wrongly reported and pc is slower than ever to load.

First screen shows memory as DDR 333 but it should be 400. It goes through loading process ok until it gets to the 'Windows XP' screen. It should then show the account page (where you click on your name) but after the XP page it just shows a black screen for over a minute before showing the account page.

Tried new mem by itself...works fine, no hang & shows DDR 400 (as it should). Old mem by itself is fine too, there's just a problem using them together.

Changed bios settings for the speed from 'auto' to 400 and the CAS from 'auto' to 3 but it's still the same.

Any suggestions? Memory is definately correct kind, it's seated correctly and paired in the correct banks.

Run memtest on both lots...both fine.

Check the memory configurations that are allowed in the motherboard handbook (if you have it).
I have a board that has 3 slots and will take 3 GB but only as follows:

    3 x DIMM DDR 266

    3 x DIMM DDR 333

    2 DIMM DDR 400

Each module can be from 32 MB to 1 GB of memory; total memory capacity is 3 GB.

Don't have a handbook, but I checked with pc manufacturer and it doesn't matter what goes first as long as the 2 x 1 GB sticks are paired in the corresponding slots and same for the 512.

(2 of the slots are coloured blue and the other 2 are black, so the 2 X1 GB for example should occupy either the 2 blue or the 2 black - not one of each)

Pc can take up to 4GB mem.

Motherboard is an Asus A8N-SL I

    CPU is NForce4 Athlon 64 4000+

Been searching on net and found this.....:(

If I'd known there might have been issues with 4 modules installed I would have got 2 x 2 GB sticks instead of 2 x 1 GB.

Running at a lower speed I can handle but the 'hang' is a no go. Would I be better just to take the 2 x 512's out? :(
