Car impounded from improperly marked residential bay

Last night I went out to my car and it wasn't there
I don't drive much so hadn't seen it for a few days; it was parked in a residential bay on my street, further down the road than I normally park it as my end of the street was packed when I last parked up.
I called the number on the council parking notices and discovered they'd ticketed my car then impounded it the following day. They say I was parked on a single yellow line. I told them it was a bay, they say it wasn't.
I've checked where I was parked and the bay markings are clearly on the road at the rear and sides of the bays. I parked at the front of the 3 car bay so couldn't see where the bay began once I'd parked, but on closer inspection there are no markings to show where the bay begins; this part of the road has been tarmacked over.
It seems like they're in the process of removing these bays but haven't fully done so, and are now charging me £300 regardless.
Can they do this? I've taken pics showing what I've described to you, where do I go from here? The woman on the phone said I could appeal once I get the car back but I don't have the money to get the car released.
Please help
