Can a DVD player be used on a 1984 tellie?

My parents are proud of their 1984 tellie which has never given any trouble and works perfectly.
However they would like to get a DVD player or recorder, but there is no scart socket on the telly. I think there is only an aerial socket. Is it possible to convert a scart plug to an aerial socket - would this work with both a player and recorder, or just a player?
Any advice would be helpful, thanks!

They really won't see the benefits that a DVD player offers over VHS with such an old TV - unless they are purely getting it because of the lack of video tapes that are now available?0

Nickmack, thanks for tip, good old Maplins.
Robt, they are very frugal people (heaven knows why as they're practically millionaires, then again that's partly why they are!) and believe in if it ain't broke, don't fix it, but yes, they like watching videos and find they cant' get them easily, plus their video has gone on the blink so they don't see the point of getting another.'Never keep up with Joneses. If the video isn't totally dead, you may be able to connect the DVD to the video and effectively use that as a modulator to feed the TV. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0

Unlikely if it's old equipment! Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0

You could always use an old RF switch, like the ones we used to use on the original nintendo's and sega megadrives.
It plugs straight into the TV, and allows you to plug two "arials" in, with a switch to chose the signal you want.0 -

But DVD's don't have an RF output! Hence the original question.
