Selling car - buyer getting speeding ticket

I've got a buyer of my car coming up from Wales to Newcastle to collect the car tomorrow evening.

I'm just wondering what would happen if the buyer was to get a speeding ticket in the car that I've just sold on his way back to Wales as it would still be in my name until DVLA receives the V5C back. I won't be able to post the V5C off until Saturday morning with the DVLA not receiving until Monday or Tuesday at the latest.

LOL, only when i'm in the forums.
  • You'd get the ticket, not the buyer, and upon receipt you'd simply write the buyer's details on the form and post it back. Job done.

The buyer of my car drove in a bus lane in Reading the day after I sold him the car. Naturally I got the Fixed Penalty notice as the DVLA records hasn't been updated yet. However the council dropped it when I was able to prove the dates that I sold the car (through eBay) and changed my insurance (printout from online). They reapplied the charge to the new registered keeper and I haven't heard back in over 5 months so it should be fine.

Also the fact that I live in London and the buyer lives near Reading helped my case :)

On any motoring fine be it speeding or parking etc there will be a section on the back to fill out if you do not own the vehicle any longer. Just fill out this, it will ask for new owners Name, Address and dates of sale etc, and send it back.

The system is set up to deal with such situations but make sure you keep a copy of the details of the new owner as DVLA have been known to not update their records for a while!
