Need advice for my boyfriend

My boyfriends 20 years old, he left school with very few GCSE's. He got a GNVQ in ICT, started an apprenticeship with computers, got a placement, ended up ditching college and got a full-time job where he had his placement. He got made redundant from there back in 06, got took on again a couple of months later, and got made redundant for a second time last Summer.

He's currently working for a supermarket doing nights, and hates it. At the moment though, we both know he's lucky to have a job at all. He's looking for other things, but with no qualifications it's tough.

He's thinking of doing some type of courses from home, but as I have done the school-college-uni route, I know nothing about it. I don't know where to start, what the costs are, what he should do, nothing.

I'm sorry if this is the sort of thing that's asked all the time, I will do a search on here, but I find it difficult to sieve through the topics on here.

Thanks

Connexions office - there should be one in your local town

Edit: Sorry - just chjecked - they're only supposed to work with up to 19 yr olds now - sure it used to be a broader service - stiil, the website looks good, with a range of servies, including onlie advisers - try them, they might well be of use anyway, as he is only 20:

I read your post actually before you edited it about the change in age. Totally forgot about them! Went straight to there site and used the chat online thing. They've given me a link to have a look at so I will show my boyfriend.

Learndirect is also a good place to look at. They often have funding to provide courses for people without qualifications so many of their courses are free/cheap.

Leardirect offer free careers guidance by phone and internet; you can also have a face to face interview with an advisor from Nextstep.
  • I would deffinately try LearnDirect, i hear that they are very good. I have gone through the same route as you and dont know all that much about them either but through hear-say they are emant to be quite good. Wish your boyfriend all the luck and success!

He could try for a degree with The Open University - and he could probably get financial help as well,
