Nah slugs and snails evolve to get around the traps humans put out for them.

They even start eating plants that are on lists of slug/snail proof plants.
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p

Not put anything down yet but something's been eating my plants. went out tonight with a torch and they were on the garlic leaves

edit: Wikipedia seems to think slugs have some use
Many species of slugs play an important role in ecosystems by eating dead leaves, fungus, and decaying vegetable material. Other species eat parts of living plants.

Some slugs are predators, eating other slugs and snails, or earthworms.

Most slugs will on occasion also eat carrion, including dead of their own kind.

i feel a little guilty killing slugs, but obviously not that guilty as i still go out every night with a trowel and torch. My first year of growing veg, have a raised bed made from bamboo fence, from wilko which so far (touch wood) is unscathed. Also have lots of pots. Have been using egg shells and coffee grinds and sprinkling slug pellets around the outside of beds.
How horrible are snails though? About 5 feet from my veg is a plant (long spiky leaves) full of snail that seem to eat the bush next to it. They dont seem interested in my veg - feel a bit guilty about killing them. Do you think its ok to leave them alone???????

:rotfl:Your neighbours must think you are slightly crazed!
I hate them too though - they have eaten my sweet peas and demolished a strawberry plant.
Any ideas on how to make a home made beer trap? Also, can you use copper tape that electrical companies use rather than special slug stuff? I bought some "speaker tape" in poundland the other day and was feeling very pleased with myself - I thought "aha! This contains copper! 50m for a pound! ya beauty!" Then got home and discovered that it was (of course) insulated in plastic... doh! I tried to strip the copper out by cutting into the plastic coating but it was futile.... makes a good garden twine though! Now it is supporting my bean canes ....

lol. They've moved on from the plants, have they?:rotfl::rotfl:

Hope we don't get any of those supersized slugs over my direction!

I was given a 'slug shower' years ago when walking past some back gardens. There I was, walking along, minding my own business, when three huge slugs came hurtling over the high fence. Two landed by my feet and the third bounced off of my shoulder and hit the ground.

I was a rather mouthy 19yo at the time, but I was so stunned by these slugs raining down on me that I was unable to even shout back at whoever had lobbed them:rotfl:
    Somethings never change OM :D

Slugs = very good for the skin, forget your expensive skin moisturisers, these things are for real and free, rub a slug in every day and end up with baby skin and one very p1ssed off slug.
Women have been doing since the start of time itself. In fact, men used to have a much better developed sense of smell and could tell the area a maiden came from, by the type of slug smell that came from her skin.

    I wish I had a hedgehog :(

Last year, pottering about in the garden in the early morning, and while on a snail hunt and talking with my gf on the phone I commented that I was getting loads of them and had been for days. When she asked how many, I didn't know. So the next day I counted them.

For the next ten days during morning and evening sweeps I collected (and cheerfully murdered) more than two hundred per day. Do the sums... that's 2,000 snails!

For the following month I got more than one hundred per day. Do more sums... that's another 3,000 snails!

Grand total of deaded slugs and snails = in excess of 5,000!

No wonder nothing much grew in my garden. Sheesh!

So far this year, for the past five days, it's been anywhere between 25 and a hundred - so I think I'm winning.

You'd have thought, with such a large local population of the things that a hedgehog would have adopted me!

    Oh, and see... http://www.squeaky.adsl24.co.uk/orace.htm :)
