Is laptop broken?

Hi
My daughter switched on her laptop tonight, it didn't go to the normal start up menu the screen seems damaged, can't see any cracks, but it is a mixture of white, pale blue with black splodges on, cant see the cursor.

It is a Lenovo 3000 N500 she only had it for Christmas, I have asked her if she has dropped it or tipped anything on it but she says no.any ideas what would cause this to happen, and would it be covered by the warranty. Thanks

Does the screen change the longer it is on?

It does seem to change brightness, but even when it is turned off can still see the black splodge, really upset, as can't afford to replace it.

I would claim on the warranty. Although it might be worth trying the Lenovo rescue button first.

Has she put anything heavy on it?

Do you have a normal monitor to try?

We can't think of anything that has been done to it, maybe the cat has stood on it, We have got the monitor to the desk top.
Not sure about the Lenovo rescue button, as the mouse doesn't seem to be working, actually i can see the cursor in the left hand corner, but when i move it over the very bright screen can't see it.
