system32????

Options
I have tried to log on to my Dell Laptop today which uses Vista Home Premium and got as far as entering my password and opening up the main screen, after this a box popped up saying something about system32 and not being able to load properly from this location. The main result is that my desktop icons have gone and the top half of my start up menu. I can only get onto the internet by using one icon on the bottom menu bar. Also I cannot seem to use iplayer etc when online and the fonts on any webpage look slightly faint????

I tried to use the Works 8.5 disk that the laptop came with to see if I could reinstall anything useful but to no avail. The only problem that I have had resently is Internet Explorer closing my internet connection down very frequesntly due to an Adobe add-on that I think I need to use BBCiplayer. The other noticeable difference is I cannot use the shirt key on the keypad to use the top row of symbols.

Sorry if I have not explained myself fully but any help (or ideas about what has gone wrong) in restoring my laptop back to normal would be fantastic and I would be imensley grateful

cheers
