  • I am still disgusted in the majority - yes i say majority now as i have listed numerous items on freecycle the past few weeks and about 1 in 20 actually are ever polite where has courteousness gone nowdays, i am sick and tired of receiving requests for my items like this

yes i would like i can collect a week next thursday ????
    yeh i want !
    let me have it !

There is no thanks or please or anything, i am really excited by this site and would welcome to get rid of items i no longer need but come on some mild manners goes along way - if i get any requests without a please, thanks or cheers i disgard them immediately if i have no takers then the item will be going to charity shop or tip.
I do not believe in giving my hard earned goods away to people who do not either respect you or have no manners !

I started using the freecycle site at least 6 months ago and it seems to be going down hill fast, if it continues in this way i unfortunately will not be using it anymore.

Totally agree with you it has indeed gone downhill significantly from when I joined some time back.

I also delete any replies that show a total lack of manners and would rather hang on to the item and re offer at a later time - it's sooooo easy to be nice n polite.

i gifted to items this week and the two folk , who came to collect on the same night, both arrived very punctually, were very polite n friendly and sent nice emails after having collected too :j:j:T:T

For me that's how it should be - it is great when it works well - sadly a sign of a decline in decency in this country is displayed more often though
Hate and I do mean Hate my apple Mac Computer - wish I'd never bought the thing
    Do little and often
Please stop using the word "of" when you actually mean "have" - it's damned annoying

I totally agree with you too i did have a couple who picked up a coffee maker who were delayed due to car breaking down - i think i had to believe them they were genuinely pleased with my item and also sent a follow up email, it is a shame that more people cannot be like them, grateful !

I've noticed increasingly on my local group that people offering stuff state that only polite requests will be considered - other e-mails will be deleted.

I do a search on people who e-mail for my stuff - always interesting to see how much they've actually offered and how many 'wanteds' they've posted :p

I would not do that - people should not need to encouraged to be polite - they should do so of their own volition - if they wouldn't be polite without being told of the need to then they can just miss out as far as I am concerned.

The search sounds a great idea pam - can one just search by user name ?

  • I'm a member of my local Freecycle group, and it's been excellent for both getting and giving away stuff.

The best item I've gotten off there is a colour laser printer - the paper tray is broken but it prints fine from the manual feed tray, and brilliant print quality! Only caveat is that it takes 4 toner cartridges, and although they last for a good few thousand pages, they're about £80 EACH to replace!

I've also given a few items away, including my mum's old computer, which someone was very grateful for as it was for their daughters to do their homework on, and some Terry Pratchett books which someone collected as a gift to a freind of theirs who is a big Pratchett fan, and had lost all her books when she split from her partner! It's great getting a quality item for free, also just as great (or greater!) giving things away that are appreciated.

I agree on the politeness front, I often get 'have you still got the item can i collect' type replies (Complete with lack of punctuation), I'll tend to go towards the politer replies when accepting offers, though I probably won't go as far as stating polite replies only.
Total debt as at Jul 2012: Too much!

I do this too and it's amazing just how much they have acquired when you check.

Our group has stopped letting you post a received if you have received and item through an "offered" which I think means a lot of the con artists and ebay sellers get away with murder. We can now only post a received if we receive after a "wanted post". I hope this makes sense.

I've also noticed a new member who I know to be a fraudster with a criminal record on our group. They only joined the other day and have already posted two wanted's and no offereds at all and are very unlikely to. What happened to new members having to offer first before posting a wanted ? Nothing in our group as we seem to get multiple wanted's from the same people on a fairly regular basis.

Grrrrrrrrrrr but despite all this the concept is fantastic and I've met some lovely people and given / received some lovely things so it's not put me off - Yet.

    Hi Juds,
Just click on 'Messages' down the left hand side, and then enter the sign in name in the search box at the top. Easy to then discover their freecycle history :D
