No Claims Bonus- move it to another car?

We have two cars in our house now. My wife's 6 year NCB is on the car that rarely gets used. Is it possible to 'move' the NCB to the bigger car she uses more often when it comes to renewal time?

Obviously this would save us money.

Thanks.

    Yes you can.
When we first went from 1 car to 2 cars we got hubbys full NCB transferred from the older cars policy onto the newer cars policy and the older car then had 0 NCB. Though because we insured both cars with the same co they mirrored the full NCB onto the older car so both cars had full NCB for one year only.

If she insures the "most used" car in her name (as the policy holder) then yes, but then you would have to insure the "less used" car in your name (or someone elses), as her NCB can only be applied to one vehicle at a time.

As shelly says, often with a multi-car policy then you can get a "mirror" of the "best" NCB - but they would have to be policyholder on one of the vehicles, not just a named driver.

    You are half right.

You are right in saying she has to be policy holder on the car that is now being used most often to be able to transfer her NCB. I assumed she would be so didn't think to mention it.....I have learned not to assume anything on here though so should have worded it like you did :D

You are right that the NCB can only be applied to one vehicle but you are wrong to say that the second car would have to be insured in someone elses name because the NCB is being used elsewhere. The OP's wife can insure both cars in her name if she wants to. If she can't get a co to mirror her NCB on both cars she can be insured on one car with full NCB and the second car will have none. Then the policy that has no NCB will start to build up in its own right.

We do it this way. Hubby is policy holder on both cars and both cars/policies now have full NCB.

    Thanks for the replies.

My wife is the only driver in our house, so she is the 'main' driver.

The only snag is that the policy with the NCB runs until August 09, whereas the car we want to move the NCB to is up in June 09. Can the NCB be moved before the policy expires?

    Not usually.

    Here's a way round it.

Swap the cars on your wifes current policy. There may be an admin charge for the change. (And expect a premium increase if the car is bigger/better).

Then do the same with the other policy. Hopefully there will be a premium refund if the replacement car is smaller/cheaper.
