Please Help Me - Bedroom Redecoration Quote Advice

Hi there - I am new to the whole 'house decoration' thing so really need some advice.
Due to a damp problem in my bedroom I am needing the room redecorating which will consist of:
removing carpet/underlay/damaged double wardrobe and disposal of
strippping of wallpaper (3.5 x 3.5m room)
rectifying of plaster damaged by damp (whole corner of room behind wardrobe)
lining of walls, painting of ceiling
skirting boards painted (undercoat and gloss)
Room rewallpapered (£6 per roll).
So far I have been quoted £750 for the whole thing (this is a fixed price). Does this sound reasonable?
Any help/comments would be much appreicated! Claire

I would say that is'nt a bad price at all.0

How high are the ceilings? How big is the window?
I would say it is 2 - 3 days work max.
Basically it sounds like quite an easy DIY job. How big is the damaged plaster area.
More detail is needed really.
It sounds like a basic decorating job so for a room of that size I would say £750 seems like a lot of money. Also if you are intending on spending so much what is £6 wallpaper like?? Is it just lining paper?
For decent wallpaper you will be looking at £12 + a roll.

If youre strapped for cash you could do a lot of the work yourself.
ie getting rid of the carpet, wardrobe, stripping the walls, wouldnt take you long and would save you a lot of labour costs.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
The ceiling is 2.2m in height.
The window is almost 1x1m.
Basically this is an insurance job - sky installed a box in the room and made a massive fck up and didn't damp proof/rain proof the fitting - this was in the winter months so we have a fair few months of damage.
The damp on the wall is behind the wardrobe so i can't give an exact measurement but its up all along the skirting board and i imagine about a metre in width.
Sky have said they are liable and have to redecorate.
I am a complete home deco novice so wouldn't be able to do anything myself.....
£750 is from someone i have been recomended..... Does this seem ok??? I don't want sky to think I have over exaggerated extreme of work needed......0 -
If it's an insirance job then who cares? They would normally require 3 estimates. Just submit them and let them pick one. Don't sell yourself short however. Advise anyone you quote for the job what the reason for the problem is and ensure that everything that needs doing, is done.

Not the best attitude to have really. You are looking at £350 - 550 so the extra £200 is pocketed by them.
"Insurance job" - who cares, do you not want the best job or some cowboy who will make it up?
The price you are looking to pay equates to a painter and decorator getting paid £50,000 a year. If you think that they are worth more than some solicitors so be it...0 -
What attitude? The point I was making was that if insurance has agreed to foot the bill for a claim, then the price is irrelevant. If you will re read my post you will see I was stating to the OP to not sell themselves short, but to ensure that everything that needs to be done, is done, so don't shop around for a cheap quote where they might cut corners. You pay insurance premiums precisely so you don't have to do that!!! You should be put back to exactly the same situation as prior to the incident, not have a cut price job done.
And I don't know where you get the £50000 a year from? If a tradie gets £750 for a job that doesn't go in their pockets! There are materials, VAT, income tax and NI, insurances (liability, income proptection etc), Van, tools, possibly premises - need I go on?

just to be pedantic , they wouldn't be VAT registered earning £50,000 as it's under the threshold0 -
